At Circles, we often say that relationships change lives. Sometimes, those relationships begin in unexpected places and continue shaping lives long after the original moment has passed.
Recently, our Circles Washtenaw County community had the privilege of visiting the courtroom of Judge Cedric Simpson. While the visit itself was memorable, the story behind it began years earlier.
One of our Leaders, Julia Martin, once stood in that same courtroom during a difficult season. She came prepared to take responsibility. But what she received that day was more than she expected.
When Judge Simpson learned that Julia was trying to provide a birthday celebration for her young sons, he directed that a portion of her payment be returned to her so she could still celebrate with her children.
It was a small act of compassion, but one that stayed with Julia.
Years later, when Judge Simpson visited a Circles gathering, our Leaders shared how his fairness and humanity had touched their lives. Julia shared her story, too.
When she told her sons about the judge that evening, they asked, “Can we meet the judge and give him a hug?”
That heartfelt question became the beginning of an unforgettable day.
Judge Simpson opened his courtroom to our Leaders, Allies, families and children. What had once been an unfamiliar and intimidating space became a place of encouragement, curiosity and possibility.
Julia’s Ally was there, too, witnessing a full-circle moment built on trust and support. And for the children, sitting behind the judge’s bench, holding the gavel and asking questions transformed the courtroom into something new: a place where they could imagine possibilities for themselves.
The day carried personal meaning for me as well.
After more than 25 years of service with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, walking back into that space never feels like simply entering a building. It feels like coming home. Seeing Corporal Allen and other former colleagues welcome our families reminded me that relationships built over decades can continue creating opportunities today.
Our Executive Director, Tyrone Kelsey, was also there, witnessing what can happen when courts, law enforcement and nonprofits come together to strengthen families and communities.
This visit was never just about a courtroom.
It was about a mother remembering an act of compassion years later. It was about children seeing a new possibility. It was about Allies walking alongside Leaders. And it was about public servants whose compassion continued to echo far beyond a single case.
One act of compassion encouraged a mother.
That mother shared her story with her sons.
Her sons asked to say thank you.
And that simple request opened the door to an experience that inspired an entire community.
That’s the ripple effect of compassion.
