Sarah Thornburg, who helped establish the local Circles program, returns as Program Director
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Friends In Deed is pleased to announce Sarah Thornburg as the new Program Director of Circles Washtenaw, effective November 16, 2026. A driving force behind the program’s establishment in Washtenaw County, Sarah brings years of experience, a deep understanding of Circles’ approach to poverty reduction, and a longstanding commitment to helping families move forward from financial hardship.
Sarah first engaged with Circles USA in 2017 and played a pivotal role in exploring and bringing the Circles model to Washtenaw County through Friends In Deed. Her return to the program’s leadership marks an exciting next chapter in the organization’s ongoing work to address the root causes of poverty and expand opportunities for families across the community.
“I have been looking for a greater challenge,” Sarah shared. “This opportunity became available at a time when I was yearning for meaningful and challenging work that makes a difference for families experiencing financial hardship. I’m excited to return to Circles and continue contributing to its impact in our community.”
Circles Washtenaw brings together people working to move beyond poverty with community Allies who offer guidance, encouragement, and meaningful relationships. Through intentional connection, resource-sharing, and opportunities to build social capital, the program helps participants strengthen their personal agency and pursue their goals. Sarah’s experience and passion will support Friends In Deed’s continued commitment to this relationship-based approach to economic mobility.
“We are excited to welcome Sarah into this role,” said R. Tyrone Kelsey, Executive Director of Friends In Deed. “Her history with Circles and her understanding of the program’s vision make her a wonderful fit to lead this important work. We look forward to what lies ahead for Circles Washtenaw under her leadership.”
Friends In Deed also extends its sincere gratitude to Twana Greene for her service as Program Director. Twana has elected to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities, and the organization wishes her every success in this next chapter. Friends In Deed is grateful for her contributions to Circles Washtenaw and the families and community members she has served.
As Circles Washtenaw enters this new chapter, Friends In Deed remains committed to building relationships, strengthening community connections, and working alongside families as they pursue lasting economic mobility.
